Who we are

In 2015, thanks to the union of experts in the sports field sector, a company of the same name was born from an innovative hybrid grass system, launched in 2012 and adopted in many European football fields.

The POWERgrass hybrid turf system

The comfort and safety of natural grass, so loved by professional players, are combined with the resistance of synthetic grass for a greater number of hours of real use. POWERgrass has raised expectations for the construction of prestigious courses, following the Green Economy guidelines for"more play and less plastic". Dr. Niko Sarris

The POWERgrass hybrid turf system

POWERgrass is a hybrid grass playing field aimed at creating sports fields for far-sighted investors who want quality & savings!

The POWERgrass system is offered at a competitive price, equivalent to the cost of an entirely synthetic pitch made according to the LND regulation with the characteristics of a Professional pitch, which can be amortized over a longer period, up to 20 years.

The system requires a person with basic skills for the care of natural grass but maintenance costs are reduced because, compared to a natural pitch, mud and holes no longer form thanks to a draining playing surface that is resistant to frequent use. In fact, with constant and simple ordinary maintenance of natural grass, the need for costly extraordinary interventions and risks associated with increasingly frequent flooding caused by bad weather are prevented.

The system has a life cycle well beyond 20 years because the natural grass, while being reinforced by the specifically designed synthetic turf, protects the synthetic fibers at the same time from the sun's UV rays and from intensive play, effectively doubling the useful life of the system compared to an entirely synthetic pitch. The annual amortization cost is thus halved and, taking into account all the overall costs, the system guarantees savings of more than 30% compared to any other sports surface.

Structural reforms and sustainable growth

In May 2021, during the broadcast "Structural reforms and sustainable growth: the role of innovation" on the CNBC channel, Dr. Niko Sarris, expert and inventor of the system, exhibited the POWERgrass hybrid system. This system, combining economic sustainability and high performance, thanks to ecological and reduced management, also generates a positive effect on a socio-environmental level. This occurs because it favors skilled employment and adheres to environmental objectives in the short, medium and long term. It is an innovative concept in the sports field sector, traditionally dominated by synthetic grass, but is becoming increasingly relevant in the process of ecological transition, both in industrialized and developing countries. The system is sustainable and suitable for all sports currently played on natural or synthetic grass, because it can be used with or without natural grass. POWERgrass, recognizing the potential of the system, also in light of regulatory provisions, maintains that it is essential to invest in communication to overcome the concept of "low maintenance" linked to synthetic grass and to effectively promote sustainability.

Prof. Luigi Conte,President of the National Association of Financial Consultants, did not fail to underline the crucial importance of maintenance in every sector, since it coincides with the monitoring and development of events

Dr. Giovanni Nava, DG for European Reforms on behalf of Italy, confirmed that the European Commission has deployed resources for the recovery and resilience plan (known in Italy as PNRR) with the commitment to produce a certain result. However, the money given in the PNRR requires a performance of the plan to achieve the expected economic, social and environmental results and 87% of the resources are linked to the implementation of the plan. Italy has an extraordinary opportunity to exploit resources to give a strong boost to its economy and to change those mechanisms which, for 20 years prior to the crisis, limited its growth below the European average. Dr. Nava recalls the words of our expert referring to the world of football, stating that to make a good player like Lukaku play you need a plan to make him play well.

The European Commission acts as an impetus to design, develop and implement the reforms needed for each country through country-specific recommendations and technical advice on effective reforms to create the platform needed to execute the plan that goes beyond the mandate of one legislature.

Starting from July 2023, the principle of result has been included in the renewed procurement code. In addition to this, the relationship between costs and benefits, together with the sustainability assessment, embraces the entire life cycle of a public work. In the link here, we will show you how to effectively combine performance and sustainability in the field of grass sports fields.

Innovation certified by 5 international patents

Research & Development lead to continuous improvement and so one innovation almost always leads to another in the search for improving solutions on a technical and economic level. As is known, the production of synthetic grass occurs in two phases: a) the tufting of the synthetic fibers to a horizontal support (backing) and b) the gluing of the synthetic fibers to the support (backing) with a fiber tear resistance equal to or greater than 30 N. In traditional carpets, the fixing of the fibers to the support usually occurs through coating on the lower part of the seams, of thermosetting fluid adhesives such as latex or polyurethane but this makes the support waterproof and, therefore, at the end of the process, holes of approximately 70 holes per m2 are made to allow the water to drain. It is clear that a traditional synthetic turf is not suitable for a hybrid turf system because the holes must be large in number and three-dimensional in shape to allow gas exchange. Furthermore, attempts to use a mesh as a backing by applying a light coating to bond the fibers does not allow the fibers to be sufficiently fixed to the support and, furthermore, the support becomes rigid.

In the POWERgrass hybrid system we have selected an innovative three-dimensional network with approximately 160 thousand knots per m2 knitted fabrics with three intertwined threads. The net is warp-knitted, resistant and soft but, to overcome the problem of fixing the fibers to the net, during the improvement of the system, we invented the LC-HM technology (linear hot melt coating). The LC-HM technology allows you to fix the synthetic fibers to the mesh, spreading a thermoplastic glue exclusively on the lower part of the seams of the quilted fibers and then heat-sealing the fibers to the support, without blocking the space between the rows, thus leaving ample space for the drainage of the water.

The LC-HM technology preserves the characteristics of the backing and solves the problem of fixing synthetic fibers to an open mesh, exceeding the FIFA standards which require fixing of the fiber tufts greater than 30N. By welding the fibers onto the specific three-dimensional network of the hybrid system, the circulation of air useful for gaseous exchange and the passage of the roots are ensured, guaranteeing the system a very long life which requires reduced maintenance of natural grass.

LC-HM technology uses a polyethylene glue instead of latex or polyurethane and makes synthetic grass recyclable because the building is mainly made of thermoplastic materials that can melt at the end of their life cycle. Today this innovative technology is used both for the production of a recyclable synthetic grass system and for the production of a reusable hybrid grass system for similar uses, extending the useful life of the building indefinitely. From an environmental point of view, both systems are eco-sustainable because they return to the production cycle at the end of their useful life.

Reduced maintenance with positive environmental impact

Maintenance is the key to the ecological transition

During the Covid-19 lockdown we raised the quality bar of the POWERgrass hybrid grass system by integrating the green maintenance method. A method that adheres to the Circular Economy with the strategic objective of promoting specialized maintenance work with a positive environmental impact. The method is based on the teachings of regenerative agriculture for the care of turf. The method brings notable benefits because it involves the most appropriate use of mineral nutrients and biological physio-activators and the reduction of the use of pesticides, until their complete elimination. The growth of turf for sports use has as its main limitation the intensive trampling because it compresses the porosity, altering the physical properties of the soil, limiting the gaseous exchange between the soil and the air. However, by aerating the surface and lightening the soil regularly, the gas exchange (CO2 ⇄ O2) necessary for biological processes is guaranteed. In the draining and well-aerated substrate the microorganisms proliferate and mineralize forms of nutrients inaccessible to plants, both those present in the soil and those supplied with fertilizers. During the days sunny, by frequently cutting the natural grass and letting the grass settle on the ground, a part of the nutrients re-enter the circle thanks to biological activity.

From an environmental point of view, there are numerous reasons to use the biological maintenance method which can be summarized as follows:

  1. mitigate climate change
    1. sequestering carbon from the air while emitting oxygen,
    2. capturing fine dust and thus purifying the air,
    3. reduce air temperature through more efficient cooling,
  2. adapt to climate change by increasing resilience to floods and droughts and reducing the risk of erosion,
  3. prevent pollution of underground aquifers by filtering rainwater and preventing connection with water,
  4. move to a circular economy by reducing waste production and using recycled products,
  5. prevent and reduce pollution by reducing chemical fertilizers and eliminating pesticides and herbicides,
  6. Promote biodiversity and resilient ecosystems to reduce overall health and environmental risks and associated costs.

Only through soil regeneration, can we have a positive environmental impact. Maintaining all green spaces with regenerative agriculture is the only method to combat pollution in our cities. It is everyone's responsibility which pays off in our health by also offering a prestigious aesthetic appearance.
